This cel is a case where a couple of special effects were used at the same time. The first one is the glow coming from the sword of light. In order to do this the sword was first painted black and then the “light” was added by computer. The second effect was to make the sword appear much closer to the camera than Goury’s body. This was done by filming the layer with the sword much closer to the camera than the other layers. You can see that in the screen capture since the hilt of the sword is blurry and slightly out of focus. Since the sword layer was to be filmed so much closer to the camera, the painted parts on the back are covered with an additional layer of thick black paint to prevent the light between the layers from showing through. It also means that the image of the sword is proportionally smaller than the other layers. That is why I scanned it separately. It looks small and a bit out of proportion if scanned directly on the other layers. You will also notice that there is some black outlines of Gourry on the sword layer. These lines do not come from the cel, but from the copy layout that was included with the set. I have included a scan of the layout so you can see that the lines match the layout instead of the cel. Fortunately, it looks like the transfer of the lines did not significantly damage the layout.
