This is a gorgeous long pan cel. It has a number of interesting features. Most book cels that I have seen have the paint applied directly to the acetate. In this one the top two layers are painted as usual, but then the ground is actually a piece of painted background paper that was firmly attached to the acetate. The next layer down does the same thing with the Shrine of the Sun. Another interesting feature is that it has a separate special effects layer with a piece cut out of the acetate in the shape of the beam coming down from the sky. The other two cels I have with this type of layer simply have no paint on the unneeded sections.

Anyways, this is from the scene where Tate and his group are watching the appearance of the Shrine of the Sun in Japan. I really do love these large background cels with tiny little people. It creates such a wonderful mood.
